June 2019
Dear NHMC Campers,
We look forward to seeing you in less than two weeks! We have a practically full camp this year, and we’re excited to welcome a number of new campers, as well as you returning veterans. No promises about the weather, but we’re expecting you all to bring sunshine with you.
A few last-minute notes & reminders:
As you prepare for camp, please refer back to the May camper letter for details about the site and suggestions for what to bring. (This can also be found on the NHMC website: http://www.northeastheritagemusiccamp.com/camper-letter-2019.html.)
The class and evening schedules can both be found on the website: http://www.northeastheritagemusiccamp.com/schedule.html.
Directions to the Common Ground Center can be found on their website: http://www.cgcvt.org/content/directions. Cell service is limited at the CGC. If you need to be reached on site, the Common Ground phone number is 802-453-2592 or 800-430-2667 (9 am to 5 pm). If you need to contact us on arrival day, you can try Chris Knippenberg’s cell phone (802-522-0952) or Oliver Scanlon’s cell phone (802-310-0677).
Please plan to arrive between 3:00 and 4:30 on Sunday, in order to give yourself time to register and settle in before dinner. Departure on Saturday will be 9:00 am.
Dinner on Sunday will again feature handmade brick-oven pizza! There will be gluten-free and vegetarian options, as well as salads and a few side alternatives. Dinner will be served 5:00-6:30, and will be followed by a potluck dessert social—if you can, please bring a dessert item to share (but it’s not obligatory!). The rest of the evening will include an orientation meeting and introduction by the faculty at 7:00, a get-acquainted mixer dance at 8:45, and an introductory group jam at 9:45.
At Sunday’s opening jam, we plan to revisit many of the “all-camp tunes” from the past couple of years, review for some and new for others. This is casual, a fun way to build common repertoire, and you’re not expected to know these beforehand. We also look forward to learning new all-camp tunes. See below for more information about these tunes.

An additional note about food and dietary restrictions: We are delighted to have Bon Temps Gourmet cooking for us again during the week; they provide wonderful meals that address most people’s dietary needs. They also communicate clearly about the ingredients in dishes, so you will know if there are items you need to avoid. Please keep in mind, however, that they are cooking for 80+ of us, and will not be able to address every dietary need at every meal. The kitchen in the EcoLodge will be available for people who need to cook their own food on occasions when the group meals won't work. There are also grocery stores near by.
Vermont Violins will be on site on one day mid-week (likely Wednesday, but exact date remains TBD). Staff members will be available for bow re-hairing, and they will also have a variety of merchandise for sale (including strings and other accessories). We hope you will patronize them, as they have been a perennial supporter of our scholarship fund. (Please note that they ask people to bring bows in early in the day for re-hairing, so they can fit in as many "hair appointments" as needed.)
There will again be a live auction, over the course of three evenings, featuring mainly items made by members of our camp community, with proceeds supporting the NHMC scholarship fund and general fund. Last year, auction items generally sold for $100-200. Many people requested some less expensive items, to have the opportunity to support the camp at a lower amount, so we are adding less pricey but equally unique items available through silent auction or raffle. We would welcome any camper or staff member to donate an item (or even a service) with a value in the $20-50 range (only one item per person please).
Reminders:
*No bed linens will be provided (EXCEPT in the Eco-Lodge). Let us know if you need to borrow sheets, a blanket, and/or a pillow.
*Glass containers are not allowed at the Common Ground Center.
*Please plan to pay for artist merchandise with cash or check. (This will be useful for the auction and raffle as well!)
*Be sure to bring a flashlight; you might also want a camping lantern for the cabins. (No candles are allowed.)
*Bring snacks and beverages to share, but please no perishables, as there is limited refrigerator space.
*Coin-operated laundry facilities are available.
*We’re asking everyone to pitch in and help with mealtime, evening clean up, and artist- store chores, so please sign up for a couple of slots when you register on Sunday. *Campers, as well as faculty, are welcome to offer a one-time workshop class during the fourth period block or a short presentation during the open “round up” block after lunch, so feel free to prepare something if you’d like—or suggest something you’d like to see. (There will again be a student open mic on Thursday evening as well.)
*Guests are welcome to attend the evening program (dances and concerts) for a $15 contribution. With advance notice, guests may also join us for dinner ($18)—please let us know as soon as possible if you expect guests for any dinners, so we can make sure there is enough food.
Be in touch if you have any questions or concerns. We can’t wait to play tunes with you!

A Note on NHMC “All-Camp” Tunes
We continue to build a library of common tunes, adding a few each year, to kick off our all- camp jams. The list is not etched in stone, which means that during camp we may or may not play these tunes. You are not expected to know them; however, if you are curious about them, here are some links (also found here:https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0Bxm_EPOcqLJNLV9NdGFSSU95Szg).
